Ecuador

Although I researched Ecuador’s entry requirements, there is often confusion between countries about current procedures, or some travel providers use it to their advantage to plunder unwary tourists. Read Book II – Bolivar’s South America – Peru to learn what can happen.

A free Tourist Visa is valid for 90 days, available on arrival to Ecuador, with some notable country exceptions – includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Senegal and Cuba.

Nicaragua

Citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and the European Union require just a passport to enter Nicaragua and may stay for up to 90 days.

Nicaragua is part of a 2006 border control agreement with Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, allowing travel among the four countries under one tourist card. The number of days of your tourist card is determined at the first of the four countries entered.

Like many countries, when you leave through an airport you must pay a C700 airport tax, which must be paid in cash in either U.S. dollars or Nicaraguan córdobas. There is also a tourist entry fee of C100 that must be paid upon arrival into the country. Frommers Travel.

When I was a child U.S. citizens and Mexican citizens crossed freely at the border, adults needing only a driver’s license and children requiring nothing. Now lines at the border are hours long. You can read about our night time border crossing from Belize to Mexico in Book Three – The Caribbean Lifestyle Belize, Cancun and Chichen Itza, and Havana, Cuba.
