Preparation and Planning

Travel Budget

If you are traveling with someone align your budgets and make sure everyone is clear about the ceiling.

ATM Cards

You should be careful of foreign transaction fees and ATM withdrawal fees. We used Capital One 360, an online bank, that never charged us ATM fees. We tried to avoid ATMS of banks that charged a fee, although it’s not always possible.

Credit Cards

You should have at least one card that has no foreign transaction fees. We traveled with Capital One Venture Card.

Wills & Powers of Attorney

You should have an emergency contact listed with your government. There should be someone that a local embassy can call just in case.

Travel Insurance

Find reviews and comparisons on the internet

ALWAYS check the visa requirements in advance of travel. For some countries visas can take as long as three or four months, so you have to plan ahead.

Passports

Make sure you have enough clean pages in your passport and it’s not going to expire while you are travelling.

Copies of Travel Documents

You should always carry a copy of your identification in case it’s lost or stolen. Carry two passport photos in case you have to replace your passport at an embassy in a foreign country.

Cloud Storage of Travel Documents

Always great to have copies in the cloud. You can find a place to get them printed in an emergency.
